"The 90s will make the 60s look like the 50s"

We like to think in terms of generations. The 60s we see as the generation of change, while the 50s we see as quaint, "perfect" America. In many ways, the political conservativism of Nixon, but more markedly Reagan and the Bushes, has been a movement to "conserve" or preserve that idealized white America of the 1950s. Though a Democrat, Clinton did little to break America out of this conservative ideal.

How have the last 8 years, under Bush, been like the 1950s? Think along the following lines: popular culture (TV, movies, fashion, music); politics and conflicts; conformity and freedom.

Are there any voices or movements that parallel the Beats? Can you see any of these "underground" voices producing real change?

Obama was elected as the man of change. Will the next ten years represent significant change, the way the 1960s did? Or will he be another Clinton?

If you believe he will preside over real change, what do you expect to see?

The Road vs. NOT The Road

In an essay of about 2.5 pages (about 500 words), please do the following:

1. Compare/contrast Sal's and Dean's life on the road with their time off the road (i.e. their time in cities and towns). Why are their road experiences generally fun and good while their settled experiences are generally more difficult? What does the ROAD come to embody or symbolize? Where, OFF the road, do they find anything that approaches the positive qualities that they find while driving?

2. As you write, imitate Kerouac's style. This doesn't mean simply write whatever pops into your head, but do look at the way he uses poetic language and stream-of-consciousness. You can also borrow some of his expressions and/or slang to make the essay SOUND more Kerouacian.

This is due on MONDAY March 2!
